De "Belle Poule" was een fregat met 60 kanonnen van de Franse marine . Fregatten waren veelzijdige en snelle oorlogsschepen, ontworpen voor snelheid en manoeuvreerbaarheid, die zowel gevechts- als verkenningsrollen vervulden.
Fregatten zoals de "Belle Poule" stonden bekend om hun snelheid en manoeuvreerbaarheid, waardoor ze ideaal waren voor een verscheidenheid aan taken, waaronder de achtervolging en aanval van vijandelijke schepen, maar ook verkennings- en patrouillemissies.
Hoewel de bouw in 1828 begon, werd de Belle Poule pas in 1834 te water gelaten. Ze was een van de eerste schepen die op een overdekte scheepswerf werd gebouwd , waardoor bouwers de bouw konden uitstellen als de politieke en financiële omstandigheden niet gunstig waren. Haar ontwerp werd geïnspireerd door de fregatklasse van de USS Constitution . Ze kreeg de opdracht in juli 1835 en vertoonde redelijk goede navigatie-eigenschappen.
De gebeurtenis die dit schip "Belle Poule" echt beroemd maakte, was de repatriëring van de as van Napoleon aan boord van de Belle Poule van het eiland Sint-Helena naar Frankrijk.
De "Belle Poule" wordt vooral herinnerd vanwege zijn rol bij het transport van de overblijfselen van Napoleon Bonaparte van Sint-Helena naar Frankrijk. Een gebeurtenis die in de herinnering zal blijven omdat deze het einde markeerde van het Napoleontische tijdperk en een grote impact had op de loop van de geschiedenis van Frankrijk en Europa.
