Sergal Sovereign of the Seas 1637 1:78 Schaal Houten Modelscheepskit
Dit prachtige schip werd in opdracht van Koning Karel 1. ontworpen en gebouwd door Phineas Pett. Ze werd te water gelaten in 1637 en stelde het ontwerp van de schepen voor de komende 200 jaar vast. Een dergelijke uitbundige versiering was nog nooit eerder of sindsdien gezien en de kosten waren astronomisch.

De HMS Sovereign of the Seas was een 17e eeuws schip van de Britse Royal Navy, eerstegraads schip van de lijn van 100 kanonnen, later bekend als just Sovereign en daarna Royal Sovereign. Het werd gebouwd door Peter Pett (later een commissaris van de marine), onder leiding van zijn vader Phineas, de kapitein van de koning, en werd op 13 oktober 1637 te water gelaten in de werf van Woolwich. Als tweede driedekker van de eerste klasse (de eerste driedekker was Prince Royal van 1610) was zij de voorloper van Nelson's Victory, hoewel Revenge, gebouwd in 1577 door Mathew Baker, de inspiratiebron was voor de innovatie van een enkel dek dat volledig gewijd was aan breedkantkanonnen.
Ze was het meest extravagant versierde oorlogsschip van de Royal Navy, volledig versierd van achtersteven tot boeg met verguld snijwerk tegen een zwarte achtergrond, en het geld dat besteed werd aan het maken van haar, 65.586 pond, hielp de financiële crisis voor Charles I te creëren die bijdroeg aan de Engelse Burgeroorlog. Charles had een speciale belasting opgelegd, het "Ship Money", om zulke grote marine-uitgaven mogelijk te maken. De vergulding alleen al kostte 6.691 pond, destijds de prijs van een gemiddeld oorlogsschip. Ze droeg 102 bronzen kanonnen (Charles bestelde expliciet zo'n hoog aantal) en was daarmee in die tijd het meest krachtig bewapende schip ter wereld. Tot 1655 was ze ook uitzonderlijk groot voor een Engels schip; geen enkel ander schip van Charles was zwaarder.
Soeverein werd tijdens de regering van Willem III met de jaren lek en defect, en werd in Chatham gelegd, waarbij ze op schandelijke wijze een einde maakte aan haar dagen door per ongeluk, door nalatigheid of door het ontwerp in brand te worden gestoken.
